                           2010 JUNIOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

The New Jersey Bass Federation received the approval of the Garrison Commander at Picatinny Arsenal to hold the annual Junior State Championship on Lake Denmark at Picatinny Arsenal again this year.  The tournament was held on Saturday, September 11th.

The Federation currently has three Junior Chapters:  Millennium, Next Generation and Riggin-N-Jiggin.  Each Junior Chapter is permitted to send their top 6 anglers, three in the 11-14 age group and three in the 15-18 age group, to the State Championship.  The junior anglers compete in tournaments held throughout the year by their respective junior chapter in order to try and qualify to compete in the State Championship.  A total of 18 junior anglers, 9 in the 11-14 age group and 9 in the 15-18 age group, competed in this year event for the title of Junior State Champion.

A total of 9 boats were utilized in the tournament, not including the emergency boat and camera boat.  The boat captains arrived at 5:30 AM and the competitors at 6:00 AM.  After registration and a rules briefing by the Tournament Director, Al Purdy, the boat captains and competitors headed for their boats to prepare for launching.  Once all the boats were launched, and after the National Anthem was played and a few final instructions were given, the tournament was officially underway at about 7:00 AM.  The competitors were instructed to return to the launch by 2:00 PM for the weigh-in.

With the help of many volunteers, the weigh-in site was set up and preparations were made for the barbeque and awards presentation, which took place immediately following the weigh-in.

Every angler that competed in the tournament received a huge assortment of products that had been donated by various individuals and companies, in addition to the products that had been donated by the Federation.  In addition, each angler received a State Championship T-shirt.

The Official Tournament Results are listed below.  All the competitors are to be congratulated as they fished hard all year long just to earn the right to compete in the State Championship tournament.

Awards were presented to the top 3 anglers in each age group.  A Big Bass award was also presented to the angler in each age group that caught the biggest fish.

The first place junior anglers at the 2010 Junior State Championship were Joseph Mantione of Next Generation in the 11-14 age group with a total of 3 fish weighing 5.72 lbs. and Jonathan Ladner of Millennium in the 15-18 age group with a total of 4 fish weighing 7.16 lbs.  Congratulations to both junior anglers.  These two anglers will be heading to Hot Springs, Arkansas next summer to represent New Jersey at the 2011 National Guard Junior World Championship.   We wish them Good Luck at the World Championship.

I want to personally thank everyone who helped to make this a successful event, including the Garrison Commander and personnel at Picatinny Arsenal, the boat captains who spent the day on the water with the competitors all the while resisting the urge to pick up a rod themselves, the Tournament Director, Al Purdy, the emergency boat captain, Joe Poms, the cameraman, Russ Avarella, as well as all the parents that volunteered to help.   I also want to thank all the individuals and companies that donated the products that were given out to the junior anglers at the tournament.  Your support of the junior anglers and the Federation’s Youth Program is greatly appreciated.
