SCHNEIDER DOMINATES AT GREENWOOD
NJBF LUNKER RECORD SHATTERED
The fourth New Jersey Bass Federation event of the season was held on August 30, 2009 at Greenwood Lake. Under pleasant temperatures and mostly bluebird skies and gusty winds, the Federation’s best anglers took to the water in search of largemouth bass and the ever-increasing number of smallmouth bass that inhabit the lake. When the dust cleared, a dominating performance took the Boater Division, while the Co-Angler Division was noteworthy for a tight, competitive spread among the top placing anglers. Also, the lunker winners in each division were truly impressive, with the Boater Division lunker obliterating the previous Federation record for big fish.
Boater Division
Dominating the anglers in the Boater Division with an impressive five-fish limit weighing 15.02 pounds was Ron Schneider. Schneider, a resident of Oak Ridge, New Jersey, and a member of the North Jersey Bass Anglers, weighed in all largemouth on the day. He indicated that he caught three of his fish in the north end of the lake on a topwater frog, but he ran to the south end of the lake to complete his limit. Fishing shallow wood and rock cover with a Norman crankbait in a winter craw pattern secured his final two fish. It is noted that Schneider is a repeat winner at Greenwood, having also won the 2006 Federation Classic held on the lake. For the victory, Schneider received the Boater Division first prize of $950.
Finishing second in the Boater Division for the second consecutive event was Rich Boyko with 13.52 pounds. Coincidentally, Boyko finished exactly 1.50 pounds behind first place in this event, exactly the same weight differential as his last event. However, in this event, Boyko, from Greenwood Lake, New York, and a member of the United Bass Anglers was one fish shy of a limit. Notwithstanding that fact, Boyko’s day was special for another reason. Among his fish was a New Jersey Bass Federation record. Upon arriving to the scales, Boyko hoisted up his lunker, an enormous and beautiful 7.94 pound largemouth. That fish easily outdistanced the largest fish ever weighed in a Federation event. Boyko stated that the fish was caught mid-lake under a dock on a green laminate Yamamoto Senko thrown on eight pound test line and spinning tackle. His second largest fish, a smallmouth, was caught on a watermelon colored Zoom Paddle Tail worm, while his other keepers fell for a red shad Riverside Ribbontail worm. For his second place Boater Division finish, Boyko received $760 with an additional $215 for his lunker.
Third place in the Boater Division went to Big D Valley Bassmasters member Nick Angiulo. Angiulo, from Hainesport, New Jersey, weighed in a five-fish mixed bag totaling 13.18 pounds. Angiulo reported predominantly fishing a mid-lake rock area surrounded by weeds. He caught his largest fish, a 4.00 pound smallmouth on a Bandit 200 crankbait in brown firetiger, with his other four fish, two largemouth and two smallmouth, falling for a texas rigged green pumpkin Zoom Baby Brush Hog. Unfortunately for Angiulo, one of his fished died before weigh-in, costing him 0.40 of a pound and a position in the standings. Nevertheless, he received $522 for his third place Boater Division finish.
The rest of the top placing Boater Division finishers were Guy Giordano with five fish weighing 12.02 pounds, worth $380; Darren Pincus with five fish weighing 11.78 pounds, worth $332; and Joe Belardo with five fish weighing 10.70 pounds, worth $237.
Co-Angler Division
The Co-Angler Division provided an exciting finish with the top three anglers separated by less than three quarters of a pound. However, the Co-Angler winner, Frank McMahon outlasted the field by posting a five-fish limit weighing 9.50 pounds. McMahon, a TBF Affiliate hailing from Great Meadows, New Jersey, indicated that he and his Boater fished both deep water and shallow weed beds on the New York side of the lake. He indicated that he caught smallmouth in the deeper areas while his largemouth were caught in the weeds. Both species fell for a texas rigged green colored Senko. McMahon stated that this was his first season fishing Federation events and his first victory. For his Co-Angler Division victory, McMahon received $610.
Finishing a close second was Mark Donio of the Raritan Valley Bassmasters with four fish weighing 9.28 pounds. Donio, from Millington, New Jersey, stated that he caught two of his keepers early in the day on a texas rigged green pumpkin Senko thrown in the weeds. His last two fish were caught later in the day, with one falling for a firetiger colored spinnerbait and his last and biggest fish eating a topwater frog. Donio indicated that this was his first time fishing at Greenwood so he wanted to especially thank his Boater, Ron Schneider, for his help during the day. He received a check for $488 for his second place Co-Angler Division finish.
Third place in the Co-Angler Division went to Bob Osman. Osman, from Maspeth, New York, and a member of the Bass Kickers, weighed in three fish totaling 8.88 pounds. Osman indicated that he fished relatively shallow scattered weed areas in the north end of the lake. He caught two of his fish on a small texas rigged green pumpkin ring worm while his biggest fish, a 4.96 pound largemouth, was caught on a small green pumpkin worm thrown on a drop shot. Osman wanted to thank his Boater, Darren Pincus, for a great day on the water. He received $335 for his third place finish.
The Co-Angler Division lunker, a 5.90 pound largemouth, was caught by TBF Affiliate Scott Debrigard. Debrigard, from Rahway, New Jersey, indicated that the fish was caught first thing in the morning in a mid-lake stump field. The fish fell for a black one-half ounce jig. Debrigard, indicating that this is his first event back with the Federation after years away, thanked his Boater, Rich Schneidereit, for a great day on the water. He received $130 for his lunker.
Rounding out the rest of the top Co-Angler Division finishers were Steve Socko with five fish weighing 8.62 pounds, worth $244; Scott Debrigard with three fish weighing 8.20 pounds, worth $213 pounds; and Dave Hayes with four fish weighing 7.18 pounds, worth $152.
