2010 NJ Bass Federation Tournament Report
Greenwood Lake, NJ - August 29th, 2010
SCHNEIDER SEES GREEN at GREENWOOD
CONLEY ON FIRE!
The third New Jersey Bass Federation point event of the season was held at Greenwood Lake on August 29, 2010. Greenwood Lake, which is on the border of New Jersey and New York, was once considered one of the premier fisheries in the area. However, consistent eradication of the abundant submergent vegetation in the Lake has made fishing significantly more difficult. Regardless, and as always, the Federations best anglers found a way to unlock the puzzle and bring quality fish to the scales. When it was all said and done, familiar faces took the prizes in both the Boater and Co-Angler Divisions.
Boater Division
For the second season in a row, and the third time in the last five seasons, Ron Schneider took home the top prize at a Federation Greenwood Lake event. Schneider, a resident of Oak Ridge, New Jersey, and a member of the North Jersey Bass Anglers, weighed in a five-fish limit weighing 11.66 pounds, enough to win the event by just over one-half pound. As indicated above, Schneider was victorious at last season’s Greenwood Lake event, where he weighed in over 15 pounds, but with this season’s tougher fishing, his total weight was enough to garner the Boater Division first prize of $1,170. As an added bonus, Schneider was congratulated by the Mayor of the Town of Greenwood Lake, New York, who also indicated that Schneider’s name would be engraved on a perpetual silver plaque that the town would display.
Finishing second in the Boater Division was Mike Wallace who weighed in a five-fish limit weighing 11.06 pounds. Wallace, from Highland Lakes, New Jersey, is a member of the Limiters. He received $936. Third place was taken by Sean Loll. Loll, from Montvale, New Jersey, and a member of the Bass Busters, weighed in a five-fish limit totaling 10.44 pounds. Additionally, Loll just barely missed winning the Boater Division lunker with his 3.66 pound kicker fish. For his third place Boater Division finish, he received $643.
The remainder of the Boater Division top finishers is as follows: Dave Frost with a five-fish limit weighing 9.92 pounds worth $468; Russ Awad with a five-fish limit weighing 9.00 pounds worth $409; and Joe Shastay with a five-fish limit weighing 8.66 pounds worth $292.
The Boater Division lunker prize was captured by Chris Oeser, a member of the Bass Assassin Six chapter. Chris, who resides in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, weighed in a 3.86 pound largemouth worth $270.
Co-Angler Division
The Co-Anglers that participated in the event generally had a difficult time producing keeper-sized bass and their weights were relatively low. Regardless, and there is no other way to say this, Co-Angler winner Jerry Conley is on fire!! Conley, a TBF Affiliate from Sewell, New Jersey, won his second consecutive event and also took home the Co-Angler lunker prize. Couple his two consecutive victories with his third place finish at the first event of the season and you have one seriously hot angler. At this event, Conley posted the only five-fish limit in the Co-Angler field and took the event by over 1.50 pounds. His limit weighed 10.60 pounds, which was anchored by his 3.28 pound lunker. For his Co-Angler Division victory, Conley received $510 and an additional $105 for his lunker.
Second place was taken by Gary Harral who weighed in three healthy fish totaling 8.98 pounds, anchored by a 3.12 pound smallmouth. Harral, from Edgewater Park, New Jersey, and a member of the Big D Valley Bassmasters, indicated that he caught his fish in the weed bed off the tip of Fox Island. Harral received $408 for his second place finish. Finishing a distant third was Ken Bertles, from Pennsville, New Jersey and a member of the Gloucester County chapter. Bertles weighed in four fish totaling 7.10 pounds and received $280.
The remainder of the Co-Angler winners included: Todd Reilly with three fish weighing 5.56 pounds, worth $204; Charles Tuite with two fish weighing 4.28 pounds worth $178; and Frank McMahon with two fish weighing 4.16 pounds worth $127.
Miscellaneous Notes
1. Only 12 anglers (15%) brought five-fish limits to the scales and 167 fish, totaling 283.76 pounds were weighed in. Every fish was released alive. However, this year’s totals illustrate the decline of the fishery on the Lake. Last year’s event, held during the same weekend, and which had fewer participants, produced 21 five-fish limits. Additionally, the overall weights and numbers were significantly down this year as compared to last years’ event which produced 194 fish weighing 379.24 pounds.
2. The Federation was honored to have the Mayor of the Town of Greenwood Lake in attendance at the weigh in. The Mayor addressed the crowd for several minutes prior to the awards ceremony.
3. By virtue of being the first and second highest placing eligible Ranger Boat owners in the event, Joe Belardo and Derick Olson will each receive $100 in Ranger Cup bonus money.
4. A free rod drawing was held at the conclusion of the event for those anglers who participated and did not receive prize money.
5. An extra $600 ($300 per Division) in prize money was added to the purse for this event by the Federation Board of Directors. The same amount will be added to each of the remaining four point tournaments.
