2010 NJ Bass Federation Tournament Report

CRUZ CRUISES to VICTORY AT CANDLEWOOD
Scenic Candlewood Lake once again showed why it is considered one of the top bass fishing lakes in the northeast. In this regard, the lake hosted the first New Jersey Bass Federation event of the season on May 23, 2010, when 97 anglers took to the water in search of the abundant largemouth and smallmouth bass that inhabit the lake. Under mostly overcast conditions, the best of the Federation produced a truly impressive outcome, with no less than 70 of the 97 anglers bringing five-fish limits to the scales.
Boater Division
Manny Cruz, from Clifton, New Jersey, and a member of the United Bass Anglers, has a knack for bringing big limits to the New Jersey Bass Federation scales as evidenced by his back-to-back victories in the 2008 and 2009 Team Tournaments. Manny was at it again in this year’s first Federation point event of the season. While the event proved highly competitive overall, Cruz found a way to easily win the Boater Division over the other 65 Boaters by over two pounds. In doing so, Cruz weighed in a five-fish limit totaling an impressive 16.40 pounds. For the Boater Division victory, Cruz was awarded a $1,350 check.
Finishing second in the Boater Division was Charlie Ginda, from Clark, New Jersey and a member of the Clearwater Bassmasters, with five fish weighing 14.30 pounds, worth $1,080. Ginda barely edged out Jim Papierz, who had 14.20 pounds and received $742. The remainder of the Boater Division top finishers were as follows: Joe Sancho, from New Windsor, New York and a member of the Bass Kickers, with 13.78 pounds, worth $540; Dan Ardin, from Dover New Jersey and a member of the Limiters, with 13.66 pounds, worth $472; and Frank White, from Wenonah, New Jersey, and a member of the Mega Bass 6, with 13.53 pounds, worth $337. White also caught the Boater Division lunker, a 5.02 pound largemouth, worth an additional $315.
Co-Angler Division
The 31 Co-Anglers that participated in the event found the fishing to be excellent and posted good weights throughout the field. Significantly, these anglers also managed to weigh in several fish breaking the five pound mark. Coming out on top, with a five-fish limit weighing 13.10 pounds, was Ray Carmen. Carmen, from Selden, New York, is another member of the Bass Kickers, whose members garnered three checks in the event. For his Co-Angler Division victory, Carmen received $690.
Finishing a distant second with five fish totaling 11.94 pounds was Co-Angler Division stalwart Ken Merlock. Merlock, from Mays Landing, New Jersey, and a member of the Bass Assassin 6, received $552 for his second place finish. Merlock also weighed in the largest fish of the event, a hefty 5.92 pound largemouth, which also took the $150 Co-Angler Division lunker prize.
Narrowly finishing third was TBF Affiliate Jerry Conley who managed 11.88 pounds and received $329. The remainder of the Co-Angler winners included: Mike Kern, from New Hyde Park, New York, and a member of the Bass Kickers with 10.64 pounds, worth $276; Antonio “Go Go” Gomez, from Paterson, New Jersey, and a member of the United Bass Anglers, with 9.84 pounds, worth $241; and Dave Frost, from North Haledon, New Jersey, and a member of the Limiters, with 9.48 pounds, worth $172.
