2010 NATIONAL GUARD
JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
This year’s National Guard Junior World Championship tournament was held in Georgia on Lake Lanier in conjunction with the Forrest Wood Cup. A total of 82 junior anglers from 41 different states competed in this national event.
New Jersey was represented by the 2009 Junior State Champions, Ari Rosenzweig in the 11-14 age group and Niklas Goebel in the 15-18 age group. Ari is from Scotch Plains and is a member of Riggin-N-Jiggin Junior Bassmasters. He was accompanied by his mother and father, Liza and Jerry. Niklas is from West Milford and is a member of Next Generation Junior Bassmasters. He was accompanied by his mother, Lena.
Everyone arrived in Georgia on August 5th for registration which was followed by a Welcome dinner/banquet and a Rules briefing. At 5:30 AM the next morning (Day 1) the junior anglers were bused to Laurel Park where they were launched immediately following the takeoff of the FLW pros competing in the Forrest Wood Cup. This was the first time that the junior anglers competed on the same body of water as the FLW pros. There were two coves where the junior anglers could fish and these coves were off-limits to the FLW pros.
At 1:30 PM the Day 1 weigh-in began. In the Mid-Atlantic Division 15-18 age group, Niklas Goebel caught 1 fish weighing 1.02 lbs. and took 2nd place behind Zach Whitten of West Virginia, who caught 1 fish weighing 2.01 lbs. In the Mid-Atlantic Division 11-14 age group, Ari Rosenzweig caught 1 fish weighing 2.07 lbs, which was just enough weight to take 1st place over Brent Engleman of Pennsylvania who caught 1 fish weighing 1.06 lbs. It was a very tough bite for all the young anglers on Day 1 and they are all to be congratulated.
Day 1 ended with the ever-famous, annual National Guard Pizza Party which was attended by all the young anglers and their families. The main course was, of course, Pizza. The Youth Directors, dressed in aprons and a cap, were put in charge of delivering the Pizzas to the hungry guests. For added entertainment, the National Guard Pro Fishing Team had put together games for the young anglers to participate in with the winners getting prizes. Some of the games involved stuffing your mouth with marshmallows and trying to talk, as well as putting your dancing skills to the test. A guest appearance by Forrest L. Wood and his wife, Nina, was just one of the many other highlights of the evening. Once again, the National Guard hosted an outstanding Pizza Party for the young anglers.
After an evening of Pizza and fun-filled entertainment, the start of Day 2 arrived quickly at 5:30 AM when the top 12 junior anglers were taken by limousine to Laurel Park for the Day 2 launch. Among the 12 anglers was Ari Rosenzweig, who had taken 1st Place in the Mid-Atlantic Division in his age group on Day 1. On Day 2, Ari was competing against 5 other young anglers in his age group who had qualified in the other 5 TBF Divisions. When the limousine arrived at the launch and the young anglers exited the car, they were greeted by camera flashes and a crowd of spectators.
While Ari and the other finalist were on the water competing for the national championship title, all the other young anglers took part in instructional and educational seminars back at the hotel before heading to the FLW Fun Zone and Outdoor Expo at the Gwinnett Convention Center.
The Day 2 weigh-in began at 1:30 PM at Laurel Park. It was another tough day on the water for the 12 finalists. Out of all the anglers who competed on Day 2, only 5 fish were brought to the scale. Although Ari diligently tried to land a keeper fish on Day 2, no keepers were to be had by him. Congratulations to Ari for making it to Day 2 and finishing in the top 6 overall in his age group.
When the Day 2 weigh-in concluded at Laurel Park, everyone headed to the Gwinnett Convention Center to meet up with the other young anglers and attend the closing ceremony where Shane Edgar of Arizona (11-14 age group) and Greg Zellers of Indiana (15-18 age group) were introduced on stage as the 2010 National Guard Junior World Champions.
Many thanks to the TBF, National Guard and FLW Outdoors for supporting today’s youth and for putting together such a great event. The event keeps getting bigger and better every year.
Finally, the 2011 National Guard Junior World Championship is scheduled to be held in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
